Description:

Darrell L. Anderson
American, (20th/21st century)
abstract, 2004
oil on canvas
Signed and dated lower left.

Biography from the artist's website: After living in Europe as a child, serving in the U.S. Army throughout Asia as a race relations instructor during the Vietnam War, and working for 12 years as Frontier Airlines' first male flight attendant, Darrell Anderson has become a keen and well-traveled observer of life.
The diversity of his personal and professional encounters with people, places, philosophy and philanthropy is reflected in the richness of his body of artwork. It includes a serigraph commissioned by the Colorado Rockies of the late Major League Baseball player and team manager Don Baylor; identity development for the annual Pan African Film Festival, named one of the nation's top film festivals by USA Today; and a wide range of public art projects that delight passersby at train stations, public universities, government buildings and Denver International Airport.

Darrell's work is rooted in his desire to unite the world through art. He has represented his hometown of Denver in its sister city of Brest, France, as an ambassador of art and cultural exchange, making return visits to create a community mosaic there. He has taught art workshops on a Navajo Reservation in Arizona; in Australia; in Beijing; in Burkina Faso, West Africa; and in small communities throughout Colorado's rural, eastern plains. He also has completed a wide range of projects aimed at building community and raising money for several nonprofit organizations, including Children's Hospital Colorado Springs; the Denver Center for the Performing Arts; The Women's Foundation of Colorado; and the Colorado Ballet, where his beautiful paintings are showcased in the company's downtown studios. "His journey with the Colorado Ballet has been a shining example of what's possible with engagement and collaboration," the ballet said of its relationship with him.

The Denver Art Museum's Alliance of Contemporary Art has recognized his career of community service in art with the AFKEY Award.
