Biography from Massillon Museum:
Best known as a landscape artist who became a significant member of the second generation of Brown County artists, Carl Graf's formal artistic training focused on portraiture and sculpture. Born in Bedford, Indiana, in 1892, Graf remained there until leaving his post as cartoonist at the local daily paper for seven years of studies at the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis, where he studied with William Forsyth. Graf assisted Forsyth on the creation of a mural for the children's wing at the City Hospital in Indianapolis. He completed his artistic educational experience with studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Art Students League and the Cincinnati Art Academy. He returned to Indianapolis and his studio from his schooldays. Fellow artist T.C. Steele invited him to paint the landscape in Brown County, Indiana, and after pitching his tent on many painting trips, Graf eventually settled there. He found fellowship with the other artists working in the art colony. In 1925, Graf built a home and studio in Brown County and soon became an integral member of its artistic community. He helped found the Brown County Art Gallery Association and served as the organization's first president in 1926. Graf married another artist, Genevieve Goth, and together they left their mark on the Brown County art community.
