Description:

George Lienemann
Indiana, (1887 - 1965)
double sided woodland scenes
oil on board.
signed lower left.

One of the Richmond School of Artist, George Lieneman studied in the Richmond Community Schools and at the studio of John Elwood Bundy. Lienemann lived in Richmond much of his life and was a shoemaker at 811 S. E St. He was a prolific painter in the style of Bundy. Many of his paintings are double sided oil on board with a typical size of 10x12 inches.

The story is told that one evening in 1924, George Lienemann picked up his son's paint brush and began painting. The next morning his family was surprised to see a complete watercolor scene of a crane standing in a stream- Not bad for a 37 year Richmond shoemaker. When Lienemann died 41 years later, he left behind more than 350 paintings of scenes from around Richmond and the Whitewater Valley. Lienemann's work, done on weekends and in the evening, chronicled the area through the 20's to the 60's. During that time, he entered 28 works over 14 years in the Richmond Art Association's Annual art exhibit. He was a quiet, extremely shy man whose work was virtually overlooked by the Indiana and Richmond art community.

Most of his works have been kept by the family, and until recently have just entered the market. Many of his paintings have been sold in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Texas.
