The BMW R50s was produced to be a high performance version of their R50 model in the early 1960s. Debuted in 1960, this bike was made with 35hp from the factory. What separates the R50s from it's less-sporty cousin lies in the internals of the engine and transmission. The bore and stroke on the R50s is different from the standard R50's and R60's of the time. Designed to rev to almost 9,000rpm vs. 7,000rpm on the run of the mill R50's allowed for a much wider power range. The R50s was produced with a different cam allowing it to produce a higher rev volume. While the ability to rev the bike to 9,000rpm sounds like an attractive prospect, the R50s had plenty of problems with the internals of the sporty engine. The common problem with these bikes was that the higher revs would put too much strain on the bottom end of the motor, causing it to blow up and often require new rods, top ends, cranks, etc.. The issues with the engine's internals certainly are one of the main factors that only 1,634 examples were ever made. Thankfully, we have here a solid survivor primed and ready for a restoration.
