Biography from the Archives of askART: Little is known about the artist Charles A. Watson (1857-1923) though several of his works, mostly marine scenes, have been offered at auction. Born in Baltimore, he appears to have remained in the area throughout his life, often executing scenes of the city's harbor and the wider Chesapeake region.

He is thought to have studied with the well-known painters, Andre Castaigne and Samuel Edwin Whiteman, both of whom had trained in France and received much recognition on the Continent.

Watson exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1906, was a member of the Baltimore Watercolor Club, and the founder of the Baltimore Charcoal Club during his lifetime.

Often associated with the Tonalist* style, Watson's harbor scenes typically emphasize the color of the sky or water and the wide expanse of the horizon one experiences when viewing the scene from the water's level.
