Description:

After Frank Halbedel, print depicting peace / church gathering with Native Americans and clergy. From ohiomemory.org: Two paintings by Frank Halbedel show the Wyandot Mission Church near Upper Sandusky, Ohio. The first oil painting, The Wyandot Indian Mission, commemorates the rededication of the church in 1887. Built in 1824, the church fell into disrepair and was restored in 1887; it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Halbedel painted this scene as he imagined the church looked when it was first constructed. Missionary James B. Findley and Wyandot Chief Mononcue are portrayed talking with other Wyandots after a church service. The painting, which measures 48" x 42", was first exhibited at the Ohio Centennial Exposition. A second untitled painting shows how the building appeared before reconstruction. It measures 42" x 32". Frank H. Halbedel (1852-1929), one of Wyandot County's most respected artists, was one of sixteen children of Swiss and German immigrant parents. Halbedel worked in a local carriage and wagon shop painting the designs on carriages. Supporting nine children forced him to restrict his time spent painting on canvas to the evening hours. He was entirely self-taught. Halbedel was buried at the Old Mission Cemetery adjacent to the Wyandot Mission Church. Image 16" x 29". Good.
