DeWitt Clinton Boutelle (1817-1884) "Lake Leuake"; oil on canvas mounted to copper; 17 1/2" x 15", signed and dated, 1879, lower left with brass title plaque on frame. Written on stretcher verso; 'Delaware Water Gap/DWC Boutelle/Lake Leuake'. Self-taught but highly influenced by Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand. Until about 1857 he painted almost entirely in the Hudson River Valley, Catskills, New Jersey and along the Susquehanna. He permanently settled in Bethlehem, PA in 1855. The gallery was only open for a few years in the 1980's in Indianapolis. Most items have been in storage since 1990.
