Biography from CalistaBockenstette.com: Calista Bockenstette's oil paintings appear in private and corporate collections in the United States as well as other locations in the world, notably Spain, France, and Saudi, Arabia

She began her adult life as a freelance writer, working mainly for Cincinnati Magazine and the Cincinnati Enquirer. She then became Executive Assistant to Thomas Warner, Production Manager of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and later owned and curated The Glendale Gallery, 23 Village Square, Glendale, Ohio.

After her two children and seven stepchildren graduated from school, Calista returned to the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning and graduated Cum Laude in 1991 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. While attending DAAP, she founded "Symposium," a fraternity for Fine Arts students and was instrumental in convincing the college to extend its famous co-op program (previously offered to architecture students only) to include Fine Art students, who now have the opportunity to assist famous contemporary artists in their studios, and also work at gallery internships.

Junior year she was awarded the Elizabeth Meta Wolfstein Travel Grant, which allowed her to study painting in Italy. At graduation, she was given the honor of curating the Senior Thesis Show. The American Association of University Women awarded her Certificates of Achievement in both painting and poetry. She also won honorable mention in the Strauss Poetry Award competition., and a Golden Key from the National Honor Society.

Between commissions and exhibitions, Calista worked as a scenic painter and designer. Since 1993, she has worked on several productions for the Cincinnati Opera Association including productions of Tosca, The Magic Flute, Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, Werter, Madame Butterfly, Rigoletto, The Abduction from the Seraglio, Tales of Hoffmann and The Flying Dutchman. She has also been hired as a scenic painter for the Cincinnati Ballet Company, Showboat Majestic, Children's Theatre and Artworks. Film credits include Neil Simon's Lost in Yonkers, The Shawshank Redemption, and, in 1990, she designed and executed an 18 1/2ft. x 5 ft. art deco painting of "Lady Justice" which was installed in the Federal Building in Chicago on location for the film, The Public Eye starring Joe Pesche.

In 1997 she won an Artist in Residence grant from the Vermont Studio, the same year she worked as a Field Editor for Better Homes and Gardens magazine.

Calista's theatrical background and flair for poetry has had a profound influence on her painting and printmaking. Dramatic lighting, lush color combinations, and strange use of metaphor distinguish her work and give a unique definition to the term New Realism. She now resides in Greenville, South Carolina and is presently working on works featuring the beauty of the upstate.
