Biography from the Archives of askART: The following was written and compiled by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California:

Carmen Cicero was born in 1926 in Newark, New Jersey. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Newark State College; also studied under Robert Motherwell at Hunter College. He taught at Sarah Lawrence College and Montclair State College. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1957 and 1963 and a Ford Foundation prize in 1965.

Since the late 1950s, Cicero has been thumbing his nose at art trends. While his peers pursued Abstract Expressionism, he revived figuration. Later he combined several unfashionable influences, from Surrealism to Maxfield Parrish. His work owes a heavy debt to Magritte, especially when Cicero places familiar objects in eerie settings.
