Charles studied under Tony Robert-Fleury and Jules Joseph Lefebvre while at the Academie Julian in Paris. He really admired Lefebvre and spoke highly and often of him, and he in turn admired Charles' work. November, 1894

"Mr. Stout has been in most of the afternoon showing me about my painting. He has helped me quite a little here and at school. So far Fleury or Lefebvre in any of my drawings has not criticized the character or pose which they say "pas mal" and last week, after Lefebvre had been to my drawing, he next criticized one of the old students who was painting. Told him he do not have the pose or character and referred him to my work as having character and feeling. Lefebvre of course thinks I did not know what he was saying but I understood part of it and got the rest from Mr. S."
