Le Tombeau de Molière (au Père-Lachaise) Molière's tomb, Père-Lachaise Cemetery, Paris.

From the private collection of Bret Waller and Mary Lou Dooley Waller, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Biography from the Archives of askART: Between 1843 and 1846 Charles Meryon was based at Akaroa, New Zealand with the French Naval corvette, Le Rhin, which had been assigned to protect the interests of the French settlement there. An etching by Meryon shows local sailors and/or colonists dragging a fishing net back to shore, a type of fishing called seine fishing. This etching comes from a group of five plates Meryon made for his Album of Souvenirs du Voyage du Rhin, which he began in 1860.

Born in Paris, Meryon was the illegitimate son of an English doctor, for which he blamed many of the problems he faced in later life. Meryon had studied watercolor painting after he finished his naval training and, on his return to France in 1846, he decided to become an artist.

He studied under the French printmaker Eugéne Bléry (1805 -1887). Meryon was admitted to the Saint Maurice asylum on the outskirts of Paris between 1858 and 1859. He exhibited at the International Exhibition in London in 1862 but in 1866 he was re-admitted to Saint-Maurice where he died.
