Biography from the Archives of askART: The following, submitted November 2005, is from Paula Guttilla, whose family owns several painting and drawings by Charles W Hudson and also the letters from the Emersons, son and daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson and close friends of Hudson.

Guttilla writes: "My mother and her sister (Great nieces) are the only desendents of Charles W Hudson. My Great-Great Uncle Charles W Hudson was the brother of Samuel Lorenzo Hudson my Great Grandfather and was the son of Lorenzo Dow Hudson."



Charles W Hudson, American Landscape Artist, studied at the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts under the artists Emil Grundman, Edmund C Tarbell, and Frank W Benson. At age seventeen (1887), he became an illustrator for publications.

He was a member of the Boston Art Club and the New York Water Color Club.

He exhibited at the Boston Art Club, Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, NY , 1915 Pan Pacific Post Expo in San Francisco, 7th Philadelphia Water Color Exhibition 1909, Boston Public Library, and St Louis, Louisiana Purchase Expo 1904.

In the early 1900's he was good friends with the daughter (Ellen T. Emerson) and son ( Edward W. Emerson) of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Hudson was allowed to use the Emerson barn as a studio at Manse House, Concord, MA.

He also was a handyman like Thoreau for the family.

Hudson spent most of his time in The White Mountains, New Hampshire painting landscapes.
