Biography from the Archives of askART: Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, David Hatfield earned a BFA from Miami
University of Oxford, Ohio, and attended the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York City, where he also did illustration work.

He currently lives in Hoosick Falls, New York, and has spent summers in Rockport, Massachusetts from the time he was thirty-eight years old. From 1978 to 1980, he operated the David Hatfield Gallery in Rockport.

Hatfield's work has won increasing recognition, and he has received over 100 awards, including over 30 first-place awards, plus the Julius Hallgarden Award from the National Academy of Design and also grants from the Greenshields and Stacey Foundations.

Hatfield's 1978 portrait of Emile Gruppe working at an easel with onlookers, painted just a few months before Gruppe died, was featured in the otherwise all-Gruppe Retrospective Exhibition of 1997 at the North Shore Arts Association, currently shown at Guido Frame Studio and Art Gallery, Boston. Other works are in Gloucester's State of the Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden 2003 exhibition, and in the permanent collection of the Federal Courthouse in White Plains, New York.

His publications include American Artist, "Conversation with David Hatfield," Charles Movalli, 12/1981, and Cover for "Prevention" magazine, 1/1982.

Hatfield is listed in Falk's latest 3-volume "Who Was Who in American Art", and in the new 2003 Davenport's, as well as in the most recent 2-volume Biographical Encyclopedia of American Painters, Sculptors & Engravers of the U.S.: Colonial to 2002, formerly known as Fielding's, "Who's Who in American Art" and "Who's Who in America".
