Coale studied at the Maryland Institute, the Fontainbleau Academie of Fine Arts in France, and the Phillips Gallery School of Art in Washington, DC. His work can be found in the Guggenheim and Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Phillips Memorial Gallery and the Corcoran in Washington, DC; and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
