Biography from Butler Institute of American Art: As a child, Evelyn Metzger attended the drawing classes of George Bridgman at the Art Students League in New York. After graduation from Vassar College, she studied sculpture with Sally Farnham and painting with George Grosz, Raphael Soyer and Umberto Romano. While in South America where she lived for many years, she worked under Guzman de Rojas in Bolivia and Demetrio Umuchua in Buenos Aires. She has participated in numerous group shows in museums and galleries here and abroad, and has held severla one-man shows, one recently in New York and another in Paris.

Last year Vassar honored the artist with a retrospective exhibition which reviewed the stages of her development. Her early work reflected in some measure the influence of her teachers, but was never without a distinct personal flavor. The cubist and abstract periods followed. The first served as a valuable discipline; the second played a vital role in releasing her imaginative powers.

The present exhibition, devoted entirely to recent works, presents the fruits of the painter's artistic maturity. In addition to the brilliant landscapes and flower pieces, of the sort that drew enthusiastic praise from the critics, this current group includes studies of the human face and figure, a subject that played a major role in her early phases and to which she now returns in full command of her uniquely personal idiom.
