Biography from the Archives of askART: A water color artist and book illustrator, Herbert J. Gute received his B.F.A. from the Yale School of the Fine Arts in 1933. For three years he was staff artist for the Yale excavations at Dura-Europos in Syria. His copies of the 3rd century frescoes uncovered in the excavations are in the classrooms at Yale University's History of Art Department.

He taught at the Yale School of the Fine Arts from 1938 until his retirement. He exhibited with the National Academy of Design*, Audubon* and American Watercolor Society* in New York and with Silvermine Guild* Artists in Connecticut. He had several one-man shows in New York, and his work is in the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, New Britain Museum of American Art, Yale University Art Gallery, Wadsworth Atheneum and the Jewish Museum in New York.

Herbert Gute joined the New Haven Paint & Clay Club* in 1938 and exhibited in Club shows until his death, receiving the Active Members Prize, Chamber of Commerce Prize, Whitney Art Gallery Prize, and a Merit Award.
