From the Archives of askArt: Muralist and painter Isabel Lydia Whitney was born in 1878 in Brooklyn, New York and traveled widely including Taos, New Mexico in the 1920s, and as a student in Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Russia. She also studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and took lessons from Arthur Dow, Hayley Lever, and Howard Pyle.,

Whitney was a member of the following New York City organizations: Brooklyn Watercolor Club; Brooklyn Society of Modern Art; Salons of America, National Arts Club; and Society of Independent Artists.

When Isabel Whitney died in 1962, the Pen and Brush Club, in New York City, held a memorial exhibition of her watercolors and drawings.

Whitney is listed in volume 28 of the American Art Annual, published in 1932 by the American Federation of Arts; Who's Who in American Art, also published by the American Federation of Arts, in 1940; and William H. Gerdts' Women Artists of America 1707-1964, published by The Newark Museum in 1965.
