Description:

James Dean, American Hollywood film actor, autograph signature on 1955 handwritten personal letter with book; personal note to close friend, Jim Brock, written shortly before Dean's death in 1955. Dean philosophizes to his friend about fond memories. The accompanying book, "Dizzy and Jimmy", has several references to Jim Brock, (pp.18;42;46;122;135-36;172-76;182-84;186-87;194-97;235.) The memoir's author, Liz Sheridan, was Dean's girlfriend in N.Y.C. in the early '50's.

Provenance: from the son of Jim Brock, who wrote the following about the letter:
"There's an interesting story about how the letter got to my Dad. He was drafted during the Korean war and left New York to go into the army. After he got out, he and my Mom moved to West Texas. Dad opened a dance and drama academy in Odessa.
One day a few of his students told him that they were going down to Marfa to watch them film the new James Dean movie, "Giant." Dad wrote a little note, and told them that he and James Dean had been friends, and asked them to give it to him if they got the chance.
When they got there, the girls from Dad's class got the attention of a production assistant and gave him the note to take to James Dean.
A few hours later, the guy came and asked the girls to please follow him.
He took them to James Dean's trailer, where Dean talked to them and gave them cokes and signed autographs. Before they left, he ripped off a piece of paper from something he was reading, and wrote the note to my Dad."

The note reads: "Dear Jim, your letter made me very happy. It recalls to mind many pleasant and trying moments of a time in ones life that can not be returned to. It's sad that the THEN in a life time sometimes seems fuller and more precious.
Accept my love for the past and my sincere wishes for the future.
James Dean"

4 1/8" x 5 1/2". Note laminated.
