From the collection of Edward P. Bentley, Art Researcher and Historian, Greenville, Michigan.

Biography from the Archives of askART: A painter in oil, watercolor and pastels of subjects ranging from still lifes to street and industrial scenes to landscapes and portraits, John Swalley was born in Toledo, Ohio. He showed early art talent, illustrating jokes for his high school newspaper and doing art work for his year book and art paper at Amherst College. Although he had obvious talent and earned much local reputation, he was basically a person who painted only in his spare time because of his need to earn a regular salary.

After graduation, he returned to Toledo and became advertising manager for the Lion Store. Later in was a partner in forming the Publisher's Press Company and served as President and Manager and eventually Owner. In the late 1940s, he retired to become a full-time artist and art teacher, and for many years he gave lessons in his studio over his garage. He also enrolled in Arthur Dow's summer school in Ipswich, Massachusetts and worked with Toledo artists, Israel Abramofsky, Wilder Darling, and Karl Kappes.

Swalley became President of a group of fellow artists who called themselves the Art Klan, and between 1918 and 1969, he was a frequent exhibitor at the Toledo Art Museum and the Toledo Federation of Art.

In 1970, he retired from painting and he and his wife moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida to be near their son and family. He died from a stroke in the summer of 1976.
