Southern Indiana landscape

Signed lower right.

Born in Indianapolis in 1891, John Wesley Hardrick showed a natural aptitude for art at an early age, which was noted by local arts patron, Herman Lieber, who saw to it that he was able to take children's classes at the John Herron School of Art in October, 1906. Hardrick attended Emmerich Manual Training High School, with Otto Stark and attended Saturday morning sessions at Herron in 1908. By 1910, he was enrolled in regular classes at Herron, studying under William Forsyth and Clifton Wheeler.

He exhibited at the 10th Annual Exhibition of Works by Indiana Artists in 1917, with fellow African-American painter, W. E. Scott. He shared a studio with Hale Woodruff for a time in the 1920s and exhibited with him in 1927 at the Art Institute of Chicago. He was also included in the Second Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Negro Art in San Diego (1929). He was awarded grants from the Harmon Foundation and worked as a WPA muralist in 1933-34.

He is featured in the book, A Shared Heritage: Art by Four African Americans, which was published by the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
