Kathryn Bradford Dyer, formerly an instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago, has died at age 89. Kay was a painter and an art teacher most of her life. She taught and lectured on painting, drawing, aesthetics, the history of art, material of the artist, techniques and color. Early in her career she was dean of the Junior School of the Minneapolis Institute and then for 22 years she taught here in Chicago at the Art Institute. For eight years she was director of the Studio School in Chicago and co-director of Katherine Lord's Studio in Evanston for five years. She exhibited at the Art Institute, Carnegie Institute, San Francisco Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a score of other institutions. Her paintings are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum (New York City), Museum of Modern Art (New York City), Brooklyn Museum of Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, City Art Museum of St. Louis, Denver Art Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), Phillips Memorial Gallery (Washington, D.C.) and many other museums. Among her many awards are the Kohnstamm prize and the Armstrong prize in 1940.
She was married and later divorced from Briggs Dyer.
