Biography from the Archives of askART: Laura Craven was born on August 12, 1874 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died on November 9, 1951 at Portland, Pennsylvania.. She was buried at the Delaware Cemetery in Dingman's Ferry, Pike County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Frank Craven and Mary Humphrey and may have been of early Quaker ancestry, as Craven and Humphrey were common English Quaker names in Philadelphia and New Jersey.

Laura Craven married Mr. Lynne K. Lewis, and they had a son named Kennard Lewis of East Stroudsburg, PA. Her usual occupation, as listed in her funeral home record of 1951, was "housewife."

She was a graduate of the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Arts and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She studied under William Langson Lathrop, William Merritt Chase, and Elliott Daingerfield, and was a member of the Plastic Club of Philadelphia (founded 1897) between the years of 1905 and 1944.

The artist has work in the Library Collection of the Academy of Natural Sciences. Her landscape paintings reflect the Bucks County impressionists of the turn of the century.
