Biography from Auctionata: Mark George Tobey - the forerunner of ‘Abstract Expressionism' - was born in 1890 in Centerville in the United States.

His works show the influence of the Far East, and calligraphic art. Among his best known works, there are the ‘White Writings' (since 1944), in which network-like structures spread before a bright background.

Tobey studied at the Art Institute in Chicago and worked as an industrial designer, portrait painter, and fashion illustrator for Vogue. In 1958, Tobey exhibited at the Venice Biennial, and received international recognition.

Works by Tobey can be found in important collections of museums, including the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as the Whitney Museum of Art in New York.

Mark George Tobey died 1976 in Basel, Switzerland.

Shipping

Ripley Auctions has a professional in house shipping department. Shipping costs will include carrier fees, materials, handling, and insurance. Shipping costs are in addition to the auction purchase amount. A low bid purchase price does not mean shipping costs will be any less. The size and weight of a package will impact the cost that the carrier charges. Multiple items will impact the cost of handling. Items that are of high value will require more insurance. If you are not prepared to pay for shipping, do not bid. Some items may require a third-party shipper. You will be contacted after the auction if your order requires a third party shipper. Please let the office know if you would like to pick up your winning bid or arrange your own shipping.
Successful bidders will receive a Winning Bid Invoice after the auction. Please review your contact information. Contact the office if there are any changes. You must pay this Winning Bid Invoice first. Paid invoices are then sent to shipping for a shipping quote. You will then receive a shipping invoice. Paid shipping invoices will be shipped and a tracking number will be emailed to you. Currently all shipping carriers are reporting delays. Please note: It is the buyers responsibility to confirm shipping and billing address provided on invoices.
