Biography from the archives of AskArt: Born in Saratoga, Indiana in 1935, Martha Slaymaker, a painter, printmaker and teacher, spent a great deal of her childhood residing in Indiana then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1976, where she died in 1999 following a long battle with cancer.

Slaymaker received her formal training at Edinboro College, PA; and also studied at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio and John Herron School of Art, Indiana University, Indiana.

She was featured in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in the West and International Who's Who of Professional Women.

She had many solo and group exhibitions in the United States and internationally, and her work is displayed in both private and public collections, both nationally and internationally.

Slaymaker was also featured in the Hoosier Salon in the 1960s and 1970s, with prizes awarded (listed below). She was quoted about her work, "Obscured layers of information below the earth's service relate to existing information remaining on its surface. I see a relationship between the archaeology of my own memories, both conscious and unconscious."

Many medical facilities, including the Mayo Clinic, displayed her art given the healing essence of her work.
