Hatt, Nellie Inez (Ella) (1888-Aft 1973)

Born August, 1888, Goshen, Indiana. Died New York?

Parents: Arthur J and Ellen C. Hatt.

Article about her father, Arthur Hatt. "On their return in September (1882), the students will be delighted to see a grand tile pavement in the Rotunda. The design was furnished by a former student, Mr. Arthur Hatt, of '78, and the old liners who remember Mr. Hatt's taste need not be told that it is a thing of beauty."

J. Arthur H. Hatt was a head designer for U.S. Tile Company in Indianapolis, Indiana.

1900 Census Springfield, Ohio. Father is Photo Engraver. Sister Mabel born in Ohio in 1884; Nellie born in 1888 in Indiana. They are both listed as at school.

1910 Census Kings County, NY. Parents: Arthur J Hatt, photographer; wife, Ellen C. Hatt. Daughters Mabel K. Hatt, artist, born Ohio, Nellie, artist, born in Indiana. Note her father was also an artist who had studied with John Singer Sergeant. Her sister Mabel, (born 1884) who was three years older, studied at the PraItalictt Institute and the National Academy of Design.

1910 Census Brooklyn, Kings, NY. Nellie is 19, artist, illustration. Sister Mabel is 22, artist, illustration.

1913 Pratt Institute. Nellie received her certificate for drawing, painting and illustration. (Same time as her sister, Mabel)

1914 Illustrator for the New York Tribune

1915 New York Census. She 19, artist. Mabel 22, artist (see 1910 Federal Census)

1915 Mother, sister Mabel, and Nell appear as directors of the Arthur Hatt Company of New York, formed with a capitol of 15,000. Source: Brooklyn Daily Eagle

1917 New York City Directory. Nell Hatt, employed by the Art Hatt Company, NY. Her father is listed as pres-treas. Nell is listed as secretary, camera, screens. 117 E. 24th. Home is in Brooklyn. Note: Article "Mr. Joseph Arthur Henry Hatt, who for economy's sake, just signs his name just plain "Arthur Hatt," notifies us that he is now located at No. 67 Seventh Avenue, New York city, where he is prepared to demonstrate his color method and make a limited number of screens which correctly reproduce the tonal values of an original. This sounds good and will be welcomes by the photo-lithographers of the country."

1921 With The Meadow Folks by Prudence Gruelle. Nellie was illustrator. She was one of America's top illustrators and often appeared on magazine covers in the 20's and 30's. She lived in New York and worked on the following magazines: American Magazine, The Delineator Magazine, Saturday Evening Post, Puck Magazine (New York), Pictorial Review and Woman's World. Also illustrated Holidays in Mother Goose Land.
