Eikerman was born in Pratt, Kansas on May 16, 1908. Grew up on a farm near Pratt; graduated from Emporia State Univ. Taught in high schools in Pratt and Winfield before attending the Univ. of Kansas for one year of graduate work. Eikerman transferred to Columbia Univ. in New York, graduating with a master's degree in 1942. She returned to Kansas to teach at the Univ. of Wichita in 1942 before joining the American Red Cross in Italy in 1944-45. She returned to Wichita in 1946 then accepted a job teaching at Indiana Univ. in 1947 where she founded the metals program. While on sabbatical in 1950, Eikerman studied "Scandinavian Silversmithing" with Karl Gustav Hansen in Copenhagen. This training became the foundation of her hollowware. Aided by sabbatical leaves and study grants
from the Ford Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, Eikerman was able
to travel widely studying jewelry techniques and viewing metal collections. She
continued on the Indiana Univ. faculty until retiring as Distinguished Professor Emeritus
in 1978. She died in Bloomington, Indiana on January 3, 1995. Member: Founding member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths.Exhibitions: Wichita Decorative Arts, 1946-53, 1955-57, 1966-68, 1970; Kansas. Designer-Craftsman Show, 1954, 1956-59, 1961, 1963-64, 1966-67, 1969-70; Chicago Public Library, 1961; Indiana Univ. Art Center Gallery, 1962; and many more. Awards: Indiana Governor's Art Award, 1993; American Craft Council's Gold Medal, 1993.
