Biography from the Archives of askART: Richard Deacon is best known for his large-scale, fabricated sculptures. His wood and steel constructions are organic in form and have been compared to human anatomy.

Born in Bangor, Wales, in 1949, Deacon attended the Somerset College if Art in Taunton in 1968. He went on to study at the St. Martins School of Art in London (1970-1973) and the Royal College of Art, where he received a Masters degree in Environmental Media in 1977. He formed his artistic style and vision during his academic years and by the time he entered graduate school he had begun to focus on architectural fabrication.

By the 1980s Deacon was working on a series of sculptures of laminated wood and sheet metal. The structures were formed from basic, raw materials bent and manipulated by Deacon into abstract forms. He continued to experiment with materials such as vinyl and plastic. Deacon was asked to do many commissioned pieces, bringing him to other countries to install immense structures for public view. He also collaborated on set designs for dance and theater performances. His greatest career recognition occurred when he won the Turner Prize in 1987. As a result of this new worldwide fame, exhibition of his work became in even greater demand. He has exhibited throughout the world in solo and group exhibitions and his public pieces include "Moor" (1990) at Victoria Park in Plymouth, and "Lets Not Be Stupid" (1991) at Warwick University. Deacon lives and works in London.
