He studied under William Baziotes and Robert Motherwell at the Hunter College, located on Manhattan's Upper East Side one of the constituent organizations of the City University of New York. Barry obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts from Hunter College. Later he joined the college's faculty.

In the later 1960's, Barry abandoned painting and is known for his non-visable works. In this invisible art, Barry used materials such as: ultrasonic radiation, inert gases, radio waves and electromagnetic energy.
