Biography from the Archives of AskArt: Born in Greece and settling in New York City, Stephen Antonakos became an artist whose primary medium was neon tubing. His pieces are geometric and are intended to change their environments into theaters of light.

He was inspired by the purity of color of neon tubing in 1961, while walking through the Garment District at night. Although he associated with Pop Artists, he did not refer to commercialism in his subject matter.

He got special attention as an artist when he exhibited his assemblage in 1960 at the Martha Jackson Gallery with Jim Dine and Claes Oldenberg and in 1964, he exhibited in a New Realism exhibit with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
