Biography from the Archives of askART
Born in Valencia, Spain, Vicente Gandia moved to Mexico in 1951. That same year he enrolled at the School of Architecture at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. He later discontinued his studies to dedicate himself entirely to fine art.

His work includes drawings, paintings, etchings and carvings, and subjects are landscapes, still life, and structures such as small homes, green houses and glass houses. They have an architectural focus on pillars, doors, windows and room arrangements. "In his world the eyes and the holes have become mirrors, while the drawing of human figures places them behind a landscape or terrace." (artfortune.com)

Mostly a self-taught artist, Gandia has exhibited in the United States, Mexico, Israel, and Europe. Among his venues are the Institute of Hispanic Culture of Guadalajara, Mexico; Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, South Carolina; Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, Spain; and Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico. In I971 he obtained the first prize in the Graphic Works Salon of Mexico.

His artwork is found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Biblioteca Luis Angel Arango in Bogotá; and the Museo de la Diputació of Barcelona.

The artist died in Cuernavaca, Mexico in April, 2009.
