Biography from askART: Biography from Claude Aguttes

Victor Vasarely was born in 1906 in Pécs, Hungary. He began studying medicine at the University of Budapest, which he ended two years later. This experience taught him a meticulous method, close to scientific teaching, which marked his painting. In 1929, the artist joined the Bauhaus of Budapest, the Muhëly. He learned to deconstruct the hierarchy of artistic practices in order to put art at the service of society. This school, founded by Alexander Bortnyik, transmitted the principles taught in Germany by artists like Walter Gropius and Wassily Kandinsky. It was during this period that he was introduced to constructivism and abstract art, two trends that were to be decisive in his subsequent work. Victor Vasarely sought to produce a less individualistic art that would be able to adapt to the changes in the modern world and industry. Arriving in Paris in 1930, he put his talent at the service of the Havas advertising agency, which taught him to assign an effect to a cause. After the Second World War, Vasarely abandoned graphic design to devote himself to painting, always advocating a revolution in artistic practice and its social functioning. Thus, he is interested in the multiple, allowing a wider diffusion of art. We find the mass diffusion encouraged by the modernists: the Bauhaus, De Stijl and the Union of Modern Artists (UAM). In 1955, he published the Yellow Manifesto, which defined kinetic art, of which he was one of the founders: art is no longer defined by a subject, nor even by a composition or a technique, but by its apprehension by the eye. This work by Victor Vasarely resonates by its originality. Hexagonal in shape on a black square background, it is made up of a cameo of painted diamonds, assembled to form a multicolored spiral. Playing with the shapes and their colors, the viewer is caught up in the optical exercise shaped by the artist, imagining both diamonds and cubes. The almost surgical precision of the artist pays tribute to the complexity of his works.
