Yvonne Wesser Obituary
Yvonne Wesser of Kent, CT passed away on the morning of May 25, 2016, at the age of 81, following a brief illness. She was born in London, England on January 28, 1935. Like so many other London children of the time, including the renowned British neurologist, Oliver Sachs, M.D., she was separated forcibly from her mother and father at the tender age of 5 to escape the Nazi Blitz, and sent to live with total strangers in the remote English country-side, where she suffered from neglect and abuse. As a young woman, she became fascinated by the sport of Judo, and, in the mid-1950's, traveled to Tokyo, Japan to further her studies at the prestigious Kodokan Judo Institute, working three jobs simultaneously to pay for her trip by steamship. There, she earned a second degree black belt, believed to be one of the highest ranks achieved by a woman in the world at that time. She competed in tournaments under the sobriquet "Basher", a nickname given to her in England for her aggressive, punishing style of play. After retiring from competition due to injury, she immigrated to America where she lived in New York City as a fine artist. Throughout her career her work was exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, Alexandria Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Art, in Los Angeles, and The Whitney Museum, among others. Her work is in permanent collections throughout the world.
While in her fifties, she obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees, fulfilling life-long objectives. An avid naturalist, she camped and hiked the Appalachian Trail well into her seventies. In her later years, she converted to Catholicism, drawing peace and strength from her faith, and was a regular presence at church services in her beloved Kent, CT.
