DeWitt Clinton Boutelle (1817-1884) Lake Landscape with Gazebo; oil on canvas mounted to copper; 17 1/2" x 15"; signed and dated, 1879, lower right with brass plaque on frame. Self-taught but highly influenced by Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand. Until about 1857 he painted almost entirely in the Hudson River Valley, Catskills, New Jersey and along the Susquehanna. He permanently settled in Bethlehem, PA in 1855. (From the archives of Astkart.) Provenance: Farber Gallery of Art, Indianapolis. The Farber Gallery collections were primarily purchased in the 1970's. The gallery was only open for a few years in the 1980's in Indianapolis. Most items have been in storage since 1990. All items with Farber provenance are guaranteed as described for an extended period of 45 days from the date of auction. Notification of concerns regarding authenticity must be made before the end of this period.
